"Pickles," syndicated by The Washington Post Writers Group for more than 15 years, tells the story of Earl and Opal Pickles as they enjoy their golden years surrounded by friends and family. A perennial favorite with readers of all ages, "Pickles" has topped comics polls across the nation again and again, and was named the best comic strip of 2001 by the National Cartoonists' Society.

Meet the Pickles Family

Earl

Earl is a retiree with way too much free time on his hands. His main hobby is driving his wife Opal crazy.

Opal

Opal is a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and cat servant. She loves Earl, but don't ask her to choose between Earl and Muffin.

Sylvia

The newlywed daughter of Earl and Opal, and mother of Nelson by a previous marriage, Sylvia is a Type A personality in a Type D family.

Nelson

Nelson is the grandson of Earl and Opal. He likes staying with them because they have the same bedtime as him.

Dan

Dan, a wildlife photographer, wished for and won Sylvia's hand in marriage. Be careful what you wish for, it may come true.

Roscoe

Roscoe is a dog of little brain and uncertain pedigree. His one regret in life is that he wasn't born a golden retriever.

Muffin

Muffin is a cat with little patience for humans. She tries to maintain her superiority while still having to beg for her Meow Mix.

Clyde

Earl's buddy and fellow park-bench philosopher. His out-of-control hair is the result of a hair plug transplant operation gone awry.

Emily

A swinging single girl who just happens to be in her seventies. Need we say more?
