Little Dog is lost, but he wouldn't stop to ask for directions even if he knew where he was going and will deny he's lost if asked. Along his circuitous journey, he encounters many other animals; some that he envies, some that he cannot understand, and some that he wishes he'd never met. Throughout his travels, somehow he always seems to end up dealing with somebody else's baggage.
The Vulture is a prime example of an animal that Little Dog wishes he'd never met. The Vulture lives proudly by the Code of the Scavenger in his pursuit of dead prey. And if the prey isn't dead yet, the Vulture believes anything can be talked into it.
Jackson the Crow isn't really interested in this "code" the Vulture keeps preaching, but he hangs out with him because it's something fun to do. Although he's more likely to tell a lie than anyone else, in some ways he's the most honest of the bunch. He calls it like it is. And it's pretty gross.
The Tortoise (aka Vernon) is a not-so-wise, not-so-old-for-a-tortoise guy content to take his time going... well, wherever. He longs to be seen as pleasant, patient, witty and well-rounded, but most just see him as round. While he does carry a sort of slow, clumsy nobility about him, it quickly vanishes each time he is mistaken for a turtle. He is suprisingly thin-skinned for a guy with a shell on his back.
The Beavers are perpetual real estate developers, razing the land and never content to let well enough alone. While they've never met a tree they didn't like, they are partial to young Aspens.
The Ivory-Billed Woodpecker is someone we're not even sure we saw because her sightings by Little Dog have yet to be confirmed. Rumor has it she faked her own death to avoid pursuit by humans, known to be hazardous to her health. |
